Before you start your window replacement project, it’s important to make the smart choice when it comes to choosing your options. Windows are more than just aesthetic pieces, since they play a major role in making your home more comfortable too.
In this post, Kiernan Remodeling and Design discusses four qualities to look for in a new window system.
1. Frame Material
When you’re planning a window replacement project, the material for your new window frame should be a top priority. Not all frames are created equal. Common materials include wood, aluminum, vinyl and fiberglass, each with its own strengths and disadvantages. Both vinyl and aluminum are excellent choices because they offer great durability, long service life and relatively low cost.
The glass for your new windows should be the next item on your priority list since it determines a large measure of energy efficiency. Generally, we don’t recommend single-panel glass because of its poor performance. Dual-pane glass is a much better option as it has a sealed air space between the two layers that helps reduce heat loss, giving it increased energy efficiency.
3. Window Style
The window style you select is largely determined by the architecture of your home. For example, some styles, such as bay windows, better suit traditional home designs. Double-hung and casement windows are excellent choices for both classic and contemporary homes, and they’re the top styles in terms of ventilation.
4. Overall Energy Efficiency
Finally, it’s important to look at the overall R-values of your new windows. As a general rule, the higher the R-value, the more the window can resist heat transfer and insulate your home. This translates to better interior comfort.
